Red-Tailed Monkey Baby Arrives at the Oakland Zoo!

The Oakland Zoo is excited to announce the arrival of a new red-tailed monkey baby! Nonami (mother) and Marley (father), the Zoo’s resident red-tailed guenons, welcomed a male offspring earlier last month. This milestone marks the first birth of a guenon monkey at Oakland Zoo.

Nonami and her baby boy are thriving. He is nursing and bonding normally with Nonami, and she is ensuring the baby stays close. As a veteran mom, Nonami has successfully given birth at her previous Zoo to two other females who also live at Oakland Zoo: Ikea and Skittles.

Nonami and her baby have joined the rest of the troop in their habitat, and the baby's sister, Ikea, has shown strong interest in her brother and wants to help Mom with grooming while Nonami supervises.  Mom and baby frequently spend time in the habitat, where visitors can see them every day, but sometimes Mom may prefer to retreat to a cozy, warm bedroom space with her baby.

Nonami and Marley were recommended for breeding by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) within the Guenon Red-tailed Monkey Species Survival Plan (SSP). SSP was created by the AZA (which accredits Oakland Zoo) to promote the sustainability of a healthy, genetically diverse, and demographically varied AZA population.

Keepers are thrilled about the Zoo's first guenon baby and are currently selecting a name for our new male red-tailed monkey.
